Ivan Ortolà achieved solid results in the first ever Grand Prix in Brazil and the Texas round. Piqueras had a promising start to both weekends, but was forced to stop due to an injury.
A double-header on the American continent marked the end of the first month of racing for Moto2. Two intense rounds: Brazil’s debut on a track new to all riders, followed by the usual stop in Texas at the Circuit of the Americas.
The Brazilian weekend held surprises for all riders, mainly due to the track conditions which forced organisers to revise the schedule and postpone qualifying until Sunday morning. It was a mixed weekend for the two riders of the QJMOTOR – PONT GRUP – MSI team. Angel Piqueras started the event in the best possible way by qualifying in an impressive fifth position on the grid. Unfortunately, he was unable to build on this promising start due to a crash after just six laps. Ivan Ortolà, on the other hand, staged a comeback, bouncing back from twelfth place on the grid to secure a top-ten finish.
At the Texas round of the championship at the Circuit of the Americas, Ivan Ortolà started from the sixth row of the grid. He put in a solid performance, steadily improving throughout the race, and finished in eleventh place, just outside the top ten. Angel Piqueras, who started from third on the grid, had a very different fate: the Spanish rider was involved in a crash in the very early stages of the race that caused a red flag, preventing him from taking part in the restart. Piqueras was taken to Dell Seton Hospital, where he underwent surgery for a fractured femur and ankle. The operation was a complete success and the young rider is doing well. His recovery timeline will be assessed in the coming days.
After a few weeks’ break, Moto2 will head to Europe for an intense spring season, starting with the Spanish Grand Prix on 24–26 April.
